For those of you that are marrying before the end of September, having your dress order underway is a must. If you haven't chosen one yet, don't despair! We have several options available for tight time frames.

First, you are most welcome to purchase a gown off the rack. We have all sizes, styles, and colors available for immediate purchase.

If you happen to fall in love with a gown that is not your size or color, we can "rush" order one for you. Be prepared for a rush fee imposed by the designer that can run anywhere from $50 to $250.

While we're on the subject of extra fees, let's talk about some of the fees that commonly occur with bridal gown orders:

1. PLUS SIZES. Many designers charge an extra fee if your gown is a bridal size 18 or larger. This fee can be anywhere from $25 - $300, depending on the designer.

2. SPECIAL LENGTHS. While we do carry designers that do not charge for a custom length, there are a few that do.

3. CUSTOM CHANGES . Let's say that you love the dress, but you want it without the beading....or a longer train....or a sweetheart neckline...if the designer is able to accomodate your request, they will most often charge for it. I know that it doesn't sound like a big deal to change minor things about a dress, but to a wedding dress designer, it's a big deal. They are creating a new pattern for your specific dress, and that takes time and expertise.

Every designer has their own set of policies when it comes to custom work, and all of them are different. If you have any questions, we are delighted to answer them for you!

Happy Shopping!

Design Inspirations!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1d-8dF62ols/TZO14k8NO1I/AAAAAAAAADg/e2JFbbB824U/s400/ibb-1300726530_0919_30428.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590011546090421074" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gwpW6SDkDnU/TZO1dOjYdSI/AAAAAAAAADY/7wqDPiYfkLE/s400/vintageglam.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590011076224251170" />
Having trouble putting your ideas into focus?! The gals at Style Me Pretty have you covered! I've chosen just a few of their many user-generated inspiration boards to help you put your visions into reality.

A very popular theme for 2011 is "Vintage Glam". This first inspiration board brings you the romantic, glamourous, and gorgeous style of years past. The feathers are a great textural touch! This bride chose muted tones of alabaster, peony, and antique ivory.

Our next board highlights a very fresh take on otherwise traditional colors....yellow and lavendar. The two colors together are unexpected, yet subtle. The result is funky, fun, and gorgeous!

For more inspiration, check out . Sometimes this is unforseeable- as in the case of a quickly planned wedding. If you are more than 6 months out from your wear date, you can save your bridesmaids some money by placing and paying for your order a minimum of 16 weeks before the wedding.

The second most common need for a rush is the addition of a bridesmaid after the order has been placed. Let me caution you, though, dye lots on "added" gowns may not match. We place our orders as a group for each bride, to ensure that the fabric for the gowns are cut from the same bolt of fabric.

Thirdly, we have botched internet orders. If you're thinking of trying on dresses in boutiques, then ordering them online, do yourself and your friends a favor and DON'T. 9 out of 10 "internet" bridesmaids orders I've seen have come in either WAY too small (and unalterable), or heaven forbid the absolute wrong color. Save yourself the headache, and leave your order to the professionals, not some website that promises rock bottom prices.

Last but not least, the fourth main cause of rush charges: Bridesmaids who wait too long to get measured and/or to pay for their gowns. We've had bridesmaids in the past that have held up an entire order because they didn't do their part on time. Our computer software is set to issue the order to the designer once the order is "complete". If you have a straggler, the entire order can be held up. Your other bridesmaids (the ones who paid on time), will each get a rush fee (anywhere from $25-$55 EACH!). These fees are not negotiable with the designer, thus they cannot be waived by any store.

Another note about a "rush"- let's say you place your bridesmaids order on a "2 week rush". You won't get the gowns in two weeks....that is the production time. Add in anywhere from 2-10 days for delivery to the store once the designer has completed production of your order. If you want the gowns overnighted after they are finished, ask your bridal shop what their overnight delivery fee is, and be prepared to pay it :)

A recap:

1. If you want your gowns on time, plan ahead as much as possible.
2. If you have any changes to your attendant list, let the store know ASAP.
3. We've heard the horror stories first hand, from customers who come to us to re-purchase gowns due to a messed up online order.

Common blunders include wrong styles, wrong sizes, wrong colors, knockoffs sold as originals, poorly made "replica" gowns, the list goes on and on.

But what about the sites (and stores for that matter) that offer the Authentic gown at a rock-bottom price? Well, it's not as good a deal as it sounds, and here is why:

The truth: Designers set a minimum price for their gowns. If stores are caught violating it, their account is closed. No more orders, and the gowns already on order are cancelled.

Internet sites (and real stores) that claim they can get any designers gown at a discount are called "trans shippers". It goes something like this. Internet site/ Slimy store doesn't carry designer "A", but they have a friend in the business that does. They take your money and have their friend order it. What's the problem with that, you might ask?

#1- You have no idea who your dress is coming from....and you have to trust that they pay their bills on time AND don't get caught trans shipping.

#2- If there is a problem with your dress, the place you ordered it from has absolutely no recourse. They don't have an account with the designer.

#3- Designers are cracking down on trans-shippers. They are being sued for tens of millions of dollars- and the dresses they've ordered? Consider them cancelled.

The bottom line is that you should only order from a store who can "show you the gown", or a significant number of current season gowns by your designer. Don't be afraid to call the designer to verify the store's authorization to sell your gown.

The stores involved in trans-shipping are scraping the bottom of the barrel, and working on very tight margins. Under most circumstances, stores in these kinds of "relationships" are in severe financial distress. Do your research, and don't be a victim.

I decided to post this blog today because just this weekend, we had two brides replacing dresses that they bought at another store here in Oregon- and that store did not and has never carried the designer that they sold to these brides. They got caught trans-shipping from another store, now the brides are not getting their gowns. Some with only weeks before their weddings. This is a sad situation, but totally avoidable if you buy your dress from an authorized retailer.

Happy shopping, ladies!

Sale Weekend!

Congratulations to our many lovely brides who found their dream dresses at our sample sale today!

Remember, the sale goes through 4pm Sunday! SAVE UP TO 75%

Just a quick reminder.....this weekend, April 10-11, we are having our once a year blowout sample sale.

What is a sample sale, you might ask? A sample sale is when a store puts their inventory on clearance for a day or two, to make room for the new stuff coming in. You get a great deal on a gorgeous dress, and the store gets the room they need. Good times.

Here are some things to remember:

* It's called a "Sample Sale" for a reason. What you're buying is the floor model- but no worries. Our inventory is in pristine condition. Our "samples" aren't like the samples you see at other stores. They haven't been hanging here for eons being tried on hundreds of brides. Our gowns are all 2009/2010 styles, not something that's been around awhile.

* Sample sales are CASH AND CARRY. This means no lay-aways and no "holds". If you love the dress, buy the dress. If you love it and leave without it, chances are someone else will come along and snap up your dress.

* There may be a wait for a fitting room, so arrive early. The doors open at 9am. We've had brides arrive as early as 6am to get a good place in line.

* Come prepared! Bring your mom, best friend.....whoever you need to help make the decision. And don't forget that wallet. (See above, no "holds").

* The prices go back up on Monday. This sale is only for two days.

That's it! See you there!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thesilverliningpdx.blogspot.com/2010/04/huge-sample-sale-save-up-to-75.html' title='HUGE SAMPLE SALE! Don't worry, we're all happy to tell you. :)

Second- if you're looking for a specific designer...like Pnina Tornai, for example, it doesn't make much sense to make an appointment at D*vid's Bridal. Likewise, if you're looking for something in a budget price range, it doesn't make much sense to waste your time shopping at the most expensive boutiques.

Our gowns run on average between $1100-$5500. That's not to say that there aren't selections under $1000, and some over $5500. We have a little bit of everything! If you have any questions, you're always welcome to call us :) 503-241-7470

Inventory Reduction Sale!

April 10-11th- Doors open at 9am

What exactly is an "inventory reduction sale", you ask? Easy. I bought too many gowns! Instead of moving to a bigger building (which we did in 08!), we're reducing our inventory by putting everything on sale for one weekend only.

It's easy- we mark them down, brides line up outside.....they rush in....and the frenzy begins! Think of it like a "Running of the Brides" sale, like the ones they do at the Filene's stores. All of our gowns are new and undamaged, so you are going to get some excellent deals :)

Remember- the samples are what's on clearance. Of course, you can order your size/color at regular price though.

Since dressing room space may be at a premium, I would suggest wearing a ballet leotard or something similar, so you can just throw the dresses right over them without undressing. (Sounds extreme, yeah....but for up to 75% off, it's worth it).

Remember to bring whoever you trust to help you decide if you find "the one", because our clearance sales are "Cash and Carry"- meaning that there are no "holds" or "layaways". That means if you find "the one", you'll get to take it home with you right then and there!

See you there!

Dress Shopping Tips

Tis the season for wedding dress shopping! Here are just a few things to remember to make the process easier for everyone:

1. Start Early! Bridal gowns can take up to 6 months to order, so plan accordingly.

2. Don't rule anything out-I have to say that at least 70% of brides end up buying a style they never thought they'd love. Be open, and try on everything!

3. Wear nice undies- Most stores will team you up with a dressing room attendant, and/or a style consultant. They will see you in your undies.....fully coverage panties (ie girl-shorts) are preferred :)

4. Know the rules, and respect them-- Most stores do not allow food or drinks, if in doubt ask. And this is a biggie....Cameras are not allowed at many fine bridal stores. Resist the temptation to sneak photos in the fitting rooms, or while "pretending" to text. It's rude, and at many stores, it may end in you being asked to leave.

5. Remember the Golden Rule- (Quoted from an article by Elisabeth A)-If you're thinking of buying your dress from some discount service, (online, a local discounter...), be sure you understand the risks, and don't waste the time of the real bridal stores in your shopping process. If you or your bridesmaids use a real bridal store to try on dresses, then leave and order the same dress from someone else whose no-service price is cheaper, you are not being a clever shopper, you are being a parasite. Your wedding dress is the last place you want bad karma from abusing someone's services.

This week's new arrivals...........

There are a ton of new arrivals this week! Take a look at the doozy above. On the left is the REAL La Sposa "Frutal" gown, on the right, a cheap chinese knockoff of it. First of all, the real La Sposa does not have cheap lace glued to cheap tulle. The genuine article has it's pattern directly embroidered onto delicate English net. The lining is soft and forms to the body- the cheap knockoff is lined in stiff satin. The difference between the two is like night and day.

The worst part? This horrid knockoff sold for $990.00. The real La Sposa is only $1600. The "deals" you're finding online are not deals at all! Sure, they use the designer's copyrighted photos....but that does not mean that you're getting the real designer gown. If you order online, I can virtually guarantee that you'll regret doing so. How do I know? Because I've had literally dozens of brides replacing gowns they bought online. NONE of them were happy with the gown they received (if they received one at all- some didn't).

One way to avoid the "I found it cheaper online" trap is to stay within your budget. If your budget is $1000, it makes no sense to try on dresses that cost $5000. There are hundreds (thousands!) of choices in every price range. Falling in love with something way out of budget is what usually leads brides to the internet knockoff sites. As you can see from the photos above, it's clearly not a good idea!

Happy Shopping!

Find your dream wedding dress (without being a bridezilla)

I found this article while surfing the net....enjoy!

Find Your Dream Wedding Dress
... Without Being a Bridezilla

There has never been a more glorious range of choice in wedding dresses than you'll find today. You're certain to find a dress that makes you feel and look fabulous! Here are some tips for a good experience when shopping for your dress.

Shopping for Your Wedding Dress

Shop Early
Think ahead and shop well in advance. Most designers require four to six months to produce a gown so you should be shopping at least nine months in advance. Some brides purchase their gowns as much as 18 months before the big day. Shopping early will give you the most choices.

You'll often get the widest range of choices at an independent bridal salon that can do special orders from designers with distinctive styles, rather than the mass market chain stores.

Appointments
Find out if you should make an appointment with the store where you intend to look at wedding dresses. Many bridal salons prefer to have brides make appointments, and some require it. Find out ahead of time. If you make an appointment but need to cancel, let the store know in plenty of time. If you are not considerate enough to cancel an appointment properly, you are not enough of a grownup to be getting married.

Try-On Fees
Find out if the store charges a service fee for trying on dresses. DressFinder is seeing a growing trend for bridal stores to charge a consulting fee which is credited to the price when you order your dress. This is a sensible approach when you consider the store's costs for providing services. You just want to know what to expect.

No Committees, Please
Go shopping by yourself, or with one or two trusted friends at most. This is YOUR decision, and you need to be able to listen to your own instincts about what dress makes you feel great. It's easier to hear what your heart says if you don't have a crowd with you.

Get a Babysitter
If you or the friends who shop with you have children, arrange for a sitter. This needs to be stressed: a bridal store is NO place for kids. While the adults are looking at dresses, a curious or bored child can cause hundreds of dollars in damages, or even get hurt. If you want to shop for a flower girl dress, arrange a dedicated outing to focus on that, and make your flower girl feel like a princess for the day.

Designer Names
Don't be too dazzled by a big designer name. You can expect top quality from a top designer, but judge the dress, not the label. Your mission is to find the dress that will take the groom's breath away and make him say a prayer of thanks as he sees you come down the aisle. The right dress will make your friends and family think, 'What a beautiful woman!' first, and 'What a beautiful dress!' sometime later.

Grooming
Before you go dress shopping, make sure you're freshly bathed and scrubbed, and wear pretty undies (no thongs, puhleez!). If your undies are too skimpy you might not be allowed to try on dresses. Wear little or no makeup. That protects the gowns, and it also lets you see more accurately which colors will be most flattering to your true skin tones. Avoid hairspray or perfume, and don't apply hand or body lotion unless it will have at least an hour to be absorbed. It's even more important to avoid tanning solutions. They can ruin a gown if the color smears. Wear small button or stud earrings, or even none, and certainly not big dangly ones that could snag. Simple pearl earrings would be ideal. Leave food or drink outside the store.

Shoes
Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Many bridal stores ask customers to remove their street shoes at the entrance, to help protect delicate fabrics and long skirts from picking up dirt.

Most salons will not have you wear shoes while you are trying on the gowns. You will usually be standing on a platform or stool as wedding gowns are cut long. Unless you are 5'9" in your bare feet you will need a hem or you will need to request that your gown be made to the exact length to accommodate your height and shoes (this is called a hollow to hem measurement). The only time you would wear shoes is if you are being measured for a custom length. Most brides will have a seamstress hem their gowns and at this point you'll need to have the shoes you'll be wearing on your wedding day.

DressFinder strongly recommends that for your wedding shoes you stick with medium or low heels, or even wedding flip flops for the reception. You'll be on your feet a lot on your wedding day, and aching feet can ruin your smile!

Stick to Your Price Range
Decide on your budget before you go anywhere near a bridal store, and resist the temptation to try on more expensive samples 'just for fun.' Falling in love with a dress that's out of your price range will either break your budget or break your heart. Try on dresses within the price range that's realistic for you.

Bridal Store Staff
The bridal store staff will wait on you more closely than you're used to when shopping for other clothes. It's their job to help you find the dress of your dreams; it's also their responsibility to be protective about the store's expensive, delicate merchandise. So don't feel crowded if a staff member comes right into the dressing room to assist you. Enjoy the attention!

Comparing
If you end up comparing dresses from different places, make sure you have a clear understanding of what services will or won't be included in your purchase price. Consider all related costs so you're comparing true totals. A price that looks higher might in fact be very competitive by the time you add up all related costs.

Commitment: Final Sale
Be sure you understand that when you order your wedding dress it is a final sale (bridesmaid dresses too). Buying a wedding dress is not like buying a mass-market T-shirt that you can return if you change your mind. Take that seriously, but don't let it scare you. If you can commit to a man, you can commit to a dress!

Guarantees and Service
Be aware that many designers will only guarantee their gowns if they are purchased through an authorized full-service bridal store. There are too many fakes in circulation for them to take any other approach.

Something else to remember is this: the majority of local bridal stores are independently owned, and each store's first responsibility is to their own customers. Do not purchase your dress from one place then expect another store to serve you if you need help with it. The store you purchase your dress from is the one that should look after you.

Karma
If you're thinking of buying your dress from some discount service, be sure you understand the risks, and don't waste the time of the real bridal stores in your shopping process. If you or your bridesmaids use a real bridal store to try on dresses, then leave and order the same dress from someone else whose no-service price is cheaper, you are not being a clever shopper, you are being a parasite. Your wedding dress is the last place you want bad karma from abusing someone's services. Remember the Golden Rule.

Alterations
Wedding and formal dresses are more closely fitted than ordinary garments. Dresses are made to standard sizes (which can vary from one designer to the next), so unless you're having a couture dress designed especially for you (and paying couture prices!), expect the fit of your dress to be close but not exact when it arrives. It's normal that your wedding dress will need to be altered to achieve the perfect fit for your unique contours. (Bridesmaid dresses, too.)

Allow for alterations in both your budgeting and your time planning. Some bridal stores handle alterations in-store; others will refer you to independent services. Altering a bridal gown is skilled and delicate work, and the seamstress is one of your most important partners. Note that it's the complexity of the alterations that will determine the price, not the amount that a seam has to be taken in. Whether the seamstress takes it in a half inch or three inches the price will be the same.

Be aware that many manufacturers charge extra for larger sizes in certain styles. Be sure to ask about that so you know all costs to expect.

BE REALISTIC ABOUT SIZE. If you have major diet or exercise plans DressFinder.com suggests that you buy your wedding gown at your largest size. All gowns can be made smaller, but the opposite (called releasing the gown) is more difficult, more expensive, and rarely looks perfect. Sometimes, it's not even possible to make the gown bigger as there's just not enough fabric to work with. With all the stress of planning a wedding, weight loss plans often fall short of the goal. You don't need the added stress of a dress that is too small and can't be made to fit.

Even if your weight stays steady, your contours can change because of your activity levels, or even just the time of the month. Try to be measured for your final fitting at the same time in your cycle that your wedding day will fall. That can head off surprises.

Avoid the biggest fitting problem of all: don't get pregant until after the wedding!

Plan B
Have a backup plan for your wedding dress. The majority of dresses arrive on time and in good condition, but supply lines stretch around the world, and things can go wrong with special orders even from famous designers. With a full service bridal salon you'll have an experienced team on your side to solve problems.

Enjoy Your Choice!
Once you've decided which dress is THE ONE, stop looking at other dresses and don't try to second-guess yourself! Have faith in your own judgement, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having one of your most special decisions looked after.

Smile! You look gorgeous!

-- Article by Elisabeth Archambault; Copyright Elisabeth Archambault, and DressFinder.com 2007

Revised Policies, 2/27/2010

Due to recent circumstances, we are forced to update our policy on photography in the store. From now on, we must impose a strict ban on photography until a gown has been purchased. In the past, we allowed photos as long as no other patron of our store was in the background. There are several reasons we are forced to change this policy, including:

1. Internet knockoffs....trust me, they are bad news. These scammy overseas factories prey on brides who think they are getting the "real" thing for thousands less than in stores. If it seems too good to be true, trust me, it is.

2. Discount websites- bridal shops invest tens of thousands of dollars a year in inventory, only to be used as a try-on store for unscrupulous no-inventory internet dealers. The time wasted by internet shoppers takes valuable time and attention away from brides who honestly intend on purchasing their gown in a salon.

3. Local ordinance- it is against the law to take a photo in a fitting room, yet this posted policy is continually violated. We see the camera phone flashes, and we hear the giggling. :P

It's unfortunate that the bad behavior of few have altered the experience for others. While we regret that we are forced to make this policy change, we hope that you understand why we are doing it.

Of course, once you purchase your gown from us, you are most welcome to take photos of it.

Bridal friends! They've carried Maggie gowns since they came into the states in 1998...."back in the day".... the designers faxed a set of 4 sketches to bridal shops, hoping they would take a chance carrying their gowns. Rosewood Bridal took them up on it, and earned their place as one of Oregon's first and most respected Maggie Sottero dealers. Bonus- they have a flawless reputation, and a great selection. You can't go wrong buying your Maggie Sottero gown from Rosewood.

If your heart is telling you that you want a short and sassy gown, you owe yourself a visit to Magnifique Boutique in Sellwood. They carry Stephanie James Couture. I don't even have words to describe how gorgeous these gowns are! There aren't alot of "cute" short gowns out there, but no worries....Magnifique has you covered! I absolutely LOVE the gown with the pink bow (I would, right?!).....

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thesilverliningpdx.blogspot.com/2010/02/bridal-friends-silver-lining-supports.html' title='Bridal friends! Which one is the fake? Can you spot the synthetic fabric, or the "not quite right" embellishments? Trust me, if you put the two gowns side by side, the difference is like night and day.

Picture #2...they look pretty similar, right? Maybe on the internet! The real designer gown is made of beautiful silk satin, and is delicately beaded. The knockoff is made of polyester satin, and has bigger beads on it to "take up room" on the gown. Knockoff designers do this to minimize labor- it takes less time to sew gharish, gigantic (cheap) beading onto a dress, instead of taking the time to do it right....Can you spot the fake?

The point I'm trying to make is that there are alot of gowns out there, and there are several that are similar. What accounts for their difference in cost is the materials and workmanship. Cheap is cheap, no matter how you slice it. Don't be fooled by imitations, especially if they are $199 and come straight out of China (or Ebay). If you want the high quality, beautiful, meticulously constructed gown you tried on, leave it to the professionals.

Mother's Gown Clearance Sale

Every mother's style in our inventory has been marked down to up to 80% off! That pretty bow on top the "gift that is YOU!" is the jewelry you wear on your wedding day.

Why not have heirloom jewelry?! You can wear it anytime after your wedding to remind you of that day that you made the promise to your beloved...you can pass it down to your kids, or even a sweet little niece! The point I'm making is that if you have quality jewelry, it will stand the test of time. Mall store jewelry isn't meant to be passed down, it's more of a one time deal. If you want heirloom jewelry, come and visit The Silver Lining!

We carry designer pieces from Haute Bride, Erica Koessler, and even vintage pieces from 1890-1950....but we are best known for our custom jewelry :) Perfectly matched to your gown, your tastes, and made of the very best materials. You choose- sterling silver, white gold, platinum, yellow gold...genuine pearls, swarovski crystals, genuine gemstones, even diamonds.....your wish is our command. If you have something specific in mind, we will sketch it out for you, and your dream "icing" will be made to order.

Remember- our annual accessories show is coming up April 2-5, 2010. I compare things like cars, cameras, and even dog food. It's just what people do.

When you are comparing prices on your wedding gown, first make sure that you are comparing apples to apples.....especially if the price you're comparing to came off the internet. There are MANY unscrupulous overseas vendors that use the designer's real photos, offering "the dress" for pennies on the dollar. It simply isn't so. Legitimate gown designers don't sell their gowns for pennies. They sell them through full service authorized boutiques.

There are a few easy ways to spot a knock off site:

1. They offer changes to the dress that the real designer doesn't.
2. The sites are often written in poor or broken english.
3. They offer the gowns in colors the designer never offered it in.
4. They put their own copyright on the designer's photos.
5. On the checkout page, there is usually a disclaimer about how the gown will look "similar" to the gown in the photo- that means it's a cheap knockoff!

Happy shopping, be careful, and have fun!

Internet Disasters, Part Deux

This week, we had a bride with a not too unusual problem- she bought her gown online to save a few bucks.....and what she got was not what she thought she was getting. Not by a long shot. She's asked me to write a quick blog to warn others about the perils of buying online.

This week's disaster belonged to a bride who bought was she thought was a Pronovias gown online:

You fall in love with a gown at a boutique, and you race home to google the style number. WOW! The price at the bridal shop is so much higher! How can they charge $2000 for the dress, when this internet site has it for $188?

The short answer to that is that they are knockoffs. And not even good ones. I'm talking about cheap laces, see through fabrics, unfinished seams, glued on embellishments. The price looks good because they're using the real designer photos.....and they're sending you their own cheaped out version. 99% of the time, it's a really cheaped out version. Trust me, "cheap" shows in photos. I've added a few to illustrate my point. The runway photos are of the Monique Lhuiller Scarlet. Notice how delicate the lace is, and how it flows so beautifully. Now, look at the other photo. The lace is stiff, the gown doesn't flow, and the bustline of the gown rides up way too high. Knockoff gowns never look the same (or even close to) the original gowns. The cost of the real gown is the difference between looking totally hot on your wedding day, or looking like you wrapped yourself in your grandmama's lace curtains. Your call...maybe your grandma has nice curtains ;)

FREE bridesmaids dress? Following graduation, he participated in a two-year apprenticeship at the House of Bianchi and was then recruited by Priscilla of Boston. During his nineteen years at Priscilla, Jim designed for numerous celebrity and prestigious political weddings, including that of Julie Nixon and Lucy Baines Johnson. In 1980, Jim moved to New York City. While holding the position of head designer at Galina Bouquet, Jim worked to establish his own style and make his unique mark on the bridal gown industry. In 1987, Jim's hard work proved prolific when he joined Jim Hjelm, Inc. Jim furthered his career in September of 2004 by premiering two exclusive new upscale bridal gown collections for the Spring 2005 season: The James Clifford Collection and the JCH Collection by James Clifford. The new James Clifford Bridesmaids Collection recently premiered for the Spring 2008 season, already receiving rave reviews from retailers and brides alike.

*************************************************************************************

Stay tuned, Portland brides! This is not something you want to leave until the last minute! There are many designers that have to be special ordered, so make sure to leave yourself enough time. Especially if we are ordering your shoes from Europe!

One of the biggest accessory trends we are seeing for 2010 are Luxe bridal shoes, decorated with freshwater pearls, silk flowers, and crystals. These are not your "ordinary" bridal shoes. They are the Mercedes-Benz of bridal shoes :) Many can be dyed after the wedding, so you can wear them with other outfits.

I think we can all agree that no one wants ouchie feet on their wedding day. A way to avoid that is to make sure your beautiful shoes are well made. This is not a place to pinch pennies. Cheap shoes are just that......cheap shoes. Look for designs that feature leather inside, and silk outside. They will mold and stretch to fit your foot, unlike their inferior counterparts.

Trying on before you purchase is crucial. Your wedding day comfort depends on you being able to enjoy your own party! This is why I never advocate buying shoes online. First of all, especially when you are dealing with designer shoes, there are a TON of inferior replicas out there. Trust me, they are not made with the same care the real designer shoes are. Secondly, most bridal/special occassion shoes cannot be returned. So....let's say you buy that gorgeous pair of $300 shoes online.....and they don't fit. Yikes!

At The Silver Lining, we carry Luxe and couture shoes in silk satin, silk taffeta, leather, with special details that are drool-worthy to say the least. Feel free to stop in any time to take a peek :)

The Nitty Gritty...

We all hate to talk about it....a taboo subject....

Bacne.

Bacne can happen to anyone. Backless, strapless, even spaghetti strap gowns show some back....and any imperfection anyone might have. Yeah, it sucks, but there is a way to have the back view of your dreams before your wedding.

Once you choose your gown, it's time to get your skin into shape! You all know that I would never recommend anyone I would not personally chose for my own wedding. If I had to stake my wedding on the beauty of my skin, I would trust it to Amanda Drak, owner of Lola Spa. This lady is the guru of skin care. Her spa is nothing short of delightful--- one on one, relaxing, and private. You are not a "number" at Lola's. The color palletes for next year are amazing. Fresh colors, pops of the unexpected, and interesting textures are where it's at for 2010 weddings.

One of my personal favs is the lime/navy combo, with touches of peacock feathers throughout. Navy is a nice neutral, and the lime green gives it a fresh, unexpected twist.

Shades of purple are also dominating the runways, thanks in part to Khloe Kardashian's wedding to Lamar Odom. Of course, they chose purple (he's a Laker)...and the pallete was gorgeous! She used various shades of purple, from violet to periwinkle. Check out the pics....the short bubble-skirt bridesmaid dress is by Enzoani. Often, a few key topics seem to circulate, perpetrated mainly by internet message boards and how-to wedding books. Education is the key to dispelling many of the common myths you may have heard while you've been planning your wedding.

Please remember that I can only speak for myself, and my own store. Certainly there are others who run their businesses differently.

1. "ALL BRIDAL SALONS DELIBERATELY ORDER YOUR GOWN TOO BIG TO MAKE YOU SPEND BIG MONEY ON ALTERATIONS". This is downright false. In fact, the seamstresses we reccommend are not employed by us, and we gain nothing from them financially. They are referred as a courtesy. At The Silver Lining, we make our best effort to order your gown to fit as closely as possible to minimize alterations. Because no one has a "cookie cutter" body, alterations here and there should be expected and budgeted for.

2. "ALL BRIDAL SALONS TELL YOU THE DRESSES TAKE SEVERAL MONTHS TO COME IN BECAUSE THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY." Not true. Depending on the designer, your gown could be delivered in 10 days or upward of six months. A few designers have inventory available, and those gowns can be delivered quickly. Custom couture gowns can take awhile, as well as gowns imported from Europe.

3. "ALL THE DRESSES IN THE BRIDAL SALON WERE GIVEN TO THEM BY THE DESIGNER". If this were true, everyone would own a bridal salon. The truth is, each and every gown, veil, accessory, etc was paid for by the store. Seasonally, inventories can cost in the several hundred thousands.

4. "YOU CAN'T GET AN HONEST OPINION OUT OF YOUR CONSULTANT BECAUSE THEY ARE ON COMMISSION". Some stores operate on commission, ours does not. In fact, very few modern salons operate solely on commission. There have been many, many times where I've honestly thought a $400 dress looked better on one of my brides than a $4000 dress, and I am quick to point it out.

5. "I WENT TO A STORE THAT SAID THEY CAN GET ME *ANY* DRESS, AND AT A DISCOUNT!". This is playing with fire. Stores and internet sites that claim they can get you "any" designer's dress are called trans-shippers. They very often do not have legitimate access to the designer's collection, so they use a "friend" in the business to order it for them. Now what if this "friend" goes out of business, or forgets to place your order? The store/site you bought it from has no recourse whatsoever. They can't ring up the designer and ask about your dress, because they aren't authorized retailers. Your money (and precious months pre-wedding) are gone.

There are many bridal lines that are "exclusive" to certain stores. This means that they have a contract with the designer that the designer will only offer the gowns for sale in their store, within a certain mile radius. If you have any concerns about a store's authority to sell a particular designer's gown, please call the designer directly. It will save you alot of time, hassle, and heartache in the long run!

DESSY, AFTER SIX, AND ALFRED SUNG BRIDESMAIDS

Effective 9/15/09, The Silver Lining will cease special orders on any Dessy Group product. Any orders made previously will be honored, and will arrive as scheduled.

The decision was a difficult one for us, because we do love Dessy's gowns. However, we have invested thousands of dollars in sample gowns and retail overhead only to lose sales to unscrupulous internet vendors. Time and time again, brides have approached us with unfixable complaints about late delivery, wrong colors, and wrong sizes that were ordered online. In an effort to quell the problem, we have elected to no longer carry gowns that are discounted online.

If you wish to purchase Dessy gowns, it is highly recommended to purchase them from a local authorized retailer. Thanks Holly!

This little post is dedicated to looking smokin’ hot on your wedding day. And not giving in to the temptation of the frump. (aka NOT looking frumpy on your wedding day). Yeah, I said it. Some brides may be happy wearing a their wedding gown, underpants, deodorant, and that’s it. But most gowns NEED more than that to look their best. I kid you not. You may think it’s just more crap that you have to buy and the bridal shop is just trying to pull one over on you. But, it isn’t.
Mike Ward, at Belle’s Photography has been telling brides not to skip the foundations for years. If a guy is willing to tell you this, then it must be important. Mike’s clients typically pay in excess of $5K for wedding photography, so they want tips on looking their best. This is one of the best tips to look beautiful, polished, and pulled together on your wedding day. You never want to hear someone looking at you and using the word ‘frumpy.’

So here is the skinny on what you need what for and when. There are 4 basic necessities each bride should consider. Your bridal shop should help you with selecting what is correct for you, your figure, and your gown.

Item #1 - The Bustier
This bad boy will hide a multitude of sins. A bustier is a bosom-to-waist control garment, which is usually made of satin. Additional features may include detachable garters, push-up cups, flexible boning, optional shoulder straps, and hook and eye closure.

Why do I need this thing? Control. Simply put, a strapless bra lacks support needed to wear most wedding gowns. If your gown does not have a bustier built into the bodice, then you should consider this thing. Reason 1 - it smooths your torso and streamlines your curves from bust to waist. Reason 2 - it gives you lift. Weather you are a AA cup or a DDD cup, you need support. You may need it for different reasons, but you need it.

Is it really uncomfortable? If you can manage a bra, you can swing a bustier. It offers moderate support through the tummy as well as the bust. Most bustiers have a low back, so that it can be worn with a low back wedding gown. If your gown is constructed of taffeta or another light weight fabric, then you can consider a seamless foam bustier. This bustier is missing the boning (think of it as under wires) that runs through the regular bustiers vertically. The boning gives the bustier more support. The foam bustiers are molded, often have a push up cup, and offer a seamless option. They do the same thing as the traditional bustier - they smooth and support. That’s what you want.

Item #2 - The Petticoat
A petticoat is a type of slip that a woman wears under her gown. It often has layers of ruffles to make the skirt of the gown fuller. Petticoats are something that are skipped by many brides if they did not buy a ballgown. BIG MISTAKE. One of the biggest reasons bride’s look frumpy on their wedding day is due to lack of a petticoat. I know some of you are thinking, I don’t want to wear that. But come on, how often are you going to be a bride and get to wear one? Petticoats are fun. They swish when you move, air can circulate under them. Regular petticoats are lined too so the crinoline isn’t scratching up your legs. So its swishy, fun, airy, and soft.

If you have an A-line gown (its NOT fitted to your body) a petticoat will make your waist look thinner, as well as removing the frump factor. The petticoat holds the skirt in place while you walk. Keeping the hemline wider than your waist creates an optical illusion and makes your waist appear smaller than it is. What girl doesn’t like that? And the layers typically end at your ankle so you don’t need to worry about tripping on it either.

There are many kinds of petticoats. They come in different shapes and sizes. As you may already know, there are a million variations of an A-line skirt. Your bridal consultant can assist you in selecting the proper petticoat. One of the most common specialty shaped petticoats we sell is the mermaid. Its a fitted slip to the knee and then flares out to support the skirt on a mermaid wedding gown.

Item #3 - The Corset
You may have thought that the corset died with chivalry, but they are still alive and kicking. And for good reason. A corset can offer support unmatched by any of its more comfortable counterparts (the merrywidow, bustier, strapless bra, nu bra, and body suits). That is the main reason why the corset is still around.

Now, I have to point out. Most corsets that you will find in stores are lingerie. They are not shaper corsets. A shaper corset does just that - it offers shape. It can pull you into an hourglass figure or as close to it as you want. The shaper corset comes in different lengths. It can extend from your bust to hip, bust to waist, under bust to hip, or under bust to low waist (also called a girdle). The corset material is typically a thick satin or damask, with boning for support, hook and eye front closure, and a lace up back.

There are 2 laces on a shaper corset. A top lace and lower lace. When laced properly, they meet at the waist (or middle). The laces are tightened from the top and the bottom of the corset to keep it from shifting while being tightened. It also gives a better shape and a better fit when laced this way. A shaper corset also has metal grommets on the back. This is so the laces can be pulled tight and can support pressure.

What do corsets do? Obviously they shape. And they shape better than any of their sister garments mentioned earlier in this post. A corset can flatten your stomach, cinch your waist, narrow your hips, and give you a bigger or smaller bust line (depending on how you lace it). It’s wonder underwear! It’s also smokin hot wedding lingerie.

We carry prefab white shaper corsets. We typically have several sizes in stock. Those come with a matching thong and garters. We can also order a custom Old World bridal corset. These have a higher price tag, but are so insanely beautiful, and offer the best support. Custom corsets take about 16 weeks to arrive. So plan accordingly.

Item #4 - Panties, Thongs, and Seamless Control Panties
OK, here are limited definitions in case you’ve been going commando so long you forgot. ;o) Panties are full coverage front and back, thongs (and g-strings) offer front coverage and minimal back coverage, and seamless control panties are something like Shapes or Spanx.

Embarrassing scenario #1 - If you are wearing a white wedding gown, and, let’s say that it’s made out of white chiffon. So you have on no petticoat because you have a flowing skirt. Hmmm. What kind of underpants should you wear? Rosebud panties are so out. Don’t even think about it. People will able to count the rosebuds on your butt as you say your vows. Do NOT be that girl. If you wear a panty, chose a nude color - that means it is solid and close to your skin tone. Why? So no one can see it!

Embarrassing situation number next. You are wearing a clingy silk wedding gown with a built-in bustier and granny panties. They are nude colored, but people can still see them. Do you know why? Silk does not hide ANYTHING, including panty lines. Its time to consider your other options - thong or Spanx? If you can see a slight shadow on your gown when facing the mirror at the waist of your thong, you can see it. And you will have to wear a seamless thong or Spanx.
When do you wear a control seamless panty? When you want no panty line and you want support through your tummy and a little lift to your derriere. Typically you wear this under fabric that is extremely unforgiving and clingy. It smooths, flattens, and lifts.

Comfort & Drawbacks
Let’s just cut to the chase. I know what some of you are thinking. I want to be comfortable. There are different levels of comfort. There is sweatpants on a rainy day with fuzzy socks comfort and there is comfort anticipated to look smokin hot. Sweat pants are NOT smokin hot. So don’t compare apples to rocks - sweatpants comfy is not wedding day comfy. On to the comfort levels and drawbacks of each item.

Out of all this stuff, what is the most uncomfortable? As a woman who has worn all this stuff at one time or another - seamless control panties (like Spanx or Shapes) by far, hands down, are the most hot and uncomfortable. That should bring a sigh of relief since most women have worn these in the form of control top panty hose at some point. Kind of a pain to take on and off. Kind of hot. Kind of sticky. Was it worth it to look hot in your little black dress? Yes. And this was the most uncomfortable out of all of this stuff? Yes. Be encouraged soon-to-be-frumpless brides.
You thought I was gonna say the corset, right? The corset actually isn’t that bad. It’s not like wearing sweats, but it’s not bad. It doesn’t dig in the way a cheap bustier does (or if you have a big chest, the way most bustiers do). It feels more like a tight hug offering support through your torso as long as you don’t lace it too tight. Minor problem, you can’t bend over and fold yourself in 1/2. But you are bride in a big wedding gown, so it’s not like you are going gardening or getting stuffed into a locker before your wedding anyway. Additional perk - its functional bridal lingerie. Oh la la!

Bustiers offer good support for most brides. The lift your bust and trim your waist. Plus size brides may find that they do not offer enough support. You can tell this is happening if your bustier boning bends under the weight of your chest. You can find a better made bustier or look into a corset. Bustiers are about as comfy as a bra with an underwire when it fits correctly. Don’t guess what size you are - ask the consultant. Most women are wearing the wrong bra size anway, so it’s normal if don’t know what size you wear.

Petticoats are comfy imho. They are soft, fluffy, and fun. It’s like having a little portable pillow tied to your butt all night - that makes you look skinny! Make sure its lined, and you’ll be fine. And if you need a custom petticoat, we can do that for you too. We have some customers who order hoop petticoats. That is where the shape is being held by boning rather than layers of fluff. A hoop petticoat is a light and easy way to get the volume of multiple petticoats without the weight.

And how much is all this stuff? The average bride can escape the frumpy funk for around $100. Considering how much you are putting into your wedding, isn’t $100 so worth ensuring you look perfect?

Practical Tips for Choosing the Perfect Gown

1. START EARLY! Bridal gowns can take 3-7 months to arrive, depending on the designer. Add in the time to alter and prepare your gown, and some "padding" time to put yourself at ease. It can take some time to find the "right" dress, so be sure to give yourself enough time to shop, decide, and order. Nothing can add to your wedding stress level more than wondering if your gown will be in on time.

2. TRY ON DIFFERENT STYLES. It's easy to get stuck on a certain "look", but the reality is that certain styles aren't for everyone. Be sure to try on at least a few gowns that are the opposite of what you thought you wanted, because very often the "one" ends up being something you never thought you would choose.

3. LEAVE THE PEANUT GALLERY AT HOME. A few trusted friends and mom, maybe? Too many opinions often leave a bride confused and frustrated. Remember, it is your gown. It's your wedding. You need to be happy with your gown, and confident in your choice. Get what makes you feel beautiful.

4. CONSIDER YOUR VENUE. Be sure to consider the when's and where's of your wedding. I think we can all agree that a 20lb ballgown with a cathedral train might be a bit out of place on the beach in Hawaii, and a backless, lowcut slipdress might be frowned upon in an Orthodox church ceremony. If you are marrying in a house of worship, make sure you know the rules ahead of time in regard to style, embellishments, modesty, and color.

5. DON'T WORRY ABOUT "CLASSIC" VS "TRENDY". The truth is, everything will look "dated" in time. As fashion rotates, styles come and go. Who would have thought leggings would have made a comeback?! If you have your eye on a style you consider "trendy", and you love it, then go for it! If it suits your personality, and makes you feel like a rockstar, then you've got the right dress.

6. ALTERATIONS. Rarely do gowns fit right off the rack, especially when you are under 5'8. A good consultant will show you how the gown will look once it's the right size and the right length. Proportion is key to a good fit!

7. UNDERGARMENTS. To get the best idea of how the gowns will look, be sure to wear or request the proper undergarments while trying on. We carry a full range of bustiers and control slips. Spanx are also popular with alot of our brides.

8. CAMERA PHONES ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but non-professional photos taken in a bridal salon can set you up for disaster. Human nature tells us to be overly critical of ourselves in photos, especially in the wrong lighting, wearing a gown in the wrong size. Professionals know just how to make you shine! That gorgeous dress that you absolutely love might be cast aside if you see a terrible camera phone pic of it, so my advice is just don't do it. :) Remember how you feel in the gown, because that is most important.

9. BEWARE OF THE DISCONTINUATION MONSTER. Bridal designers can be fickle people, always designing something new and beautiful.....the downside of that being that they have to let go of certain designs to make room for the new ones. We are generally given just short amount of time between the notification and the actual discontinuation. If you have found "the one", it's best to order when you find it.

10. BUY LOCAL. If there's a problem, question, or concern, your local full service retailer is here and ready to help. Not so if you purchase your gown online. Time and time again, I've had brides come into our store in tears, with a gown in a box (if they're lucky, sometimes there's NO dress). Every single one of them was an internet bride. There is absolutely no way to insure that you will get what you think you are getting if you order it online. Many times, I've seen fakes passed off as originals, dirty used sample gowns sold as new, or wrong sizes/colors/lengths. The reality is that the problems were avoidable.

CAROLYNE SATUER "TIMELESS" TRUNK SHOW

Carolyne Satuer Timeless Collection, available in Oregon exclusively at The Silver Lining.....

The gowns have arrived, and they are breathtaking! Your generosity is touching the lives of so many women.

Throughout our sponsorship of SARC, I've come to witness so many personal stories. One, a mother of the bride, was in tears when she wrote her donation check. Through her tears she wispered "Thank you for giving me my power back". It wasn't me, it was her. She was strong.

Another was a man who had lost his sister to a stranger attack over 30 years ago. Yet another was an Assistant DA who works with SA cases. All of you have been such a blessing in support of SARC. We can't thank you enough.

In case you haven't heard of SARC, it stands for Sexual Assault Resource Center. This wonderful organization leads the way in helping to heal the wounds of sexual assault and gender violence. They provide a 24 hour crisis line, they send volunteers to the hospitals, and they provide aftercare counseling to those of us impacted by the horror of sexual assault. Additionally, they raise awareness of the staggering statistics of sexual assault. It could be you, your friends, your sisters, neices, even your mother. Statistically speaking, by the age of 25, 1 in 7 women have experienced a sexual assault. Keep in mind that these numbers are only based on reported incidents. The true statistics are gutwrenching.

On September 26, SARC's yearly fundraiser "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" is scheduled in Beaverton, Oregon. Ladies, if you've ever wanted to see your guy stagger around in high heels, this is the time! All proceeds benefit SARC. And yes, even our (former pro linebacker!) staff jeweler, Caleb, will be donning the red high heels in support of SARC. :)

Wedding Day "Safety" Kit!

I've promised to publish this list for a long time, and here it is! :) For all your wedding day emergencies.....the little things you might want to pick up before you say "I do"..

"Boys, Boys, Boys"
- No one wants "that guy" in their wedding. You know who I'm talking about, the guy that wears white tube socks with his formal wear. Head him off at the pass, and any other potential "that guy", buy bringing a 6 pair pack of men's black socks. They'll thank you later, I promise. Be prepared by having a basket of small treats such as special toys, non-staining food items, and a "go to" person at the ready in the front row. (For the kiddies, don't let them know it's there, or they just might go to it on purpose!) Trust me on this, that knock-down drag-out tantrum thrown during your ceremony won't be quite so cute when you watch your wedding video later!

For the pets, make sure there is a water dish handy, and perhaps a familiar face to lead them off should there be something fun to bark at :)

Bridal Show Special

Attention all summer and fall brides!
